Yucay to Lima

After leaving the lovely village of Yucay (left), we travelled by bus to a small village named Chinchero. Every Sunday the local farmers bring their produce to a country market to barter and sell their wares (pictured below).

Class members bought blankets, dishes, sweaters and terra cotta llamas, among other mementos, to bring home as souvenirs. We enjoyed the vast scenery and mountain vistas (below) on the way to the airport. mkt.jpg (221388 bytes)

They described the economic, political and cultural landscape of Peru.  Peru can be described by the following four words: Democracy, Development, Drug reduction, and Dispute (as in border dispute).
Economic reform has produced a 40 percent expansion in their economy. The country's two largest exports are coffee and asparagus; their two largest imports are wheat and rice. About 22 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty. The Embassy staff discussed how alternative crops were being introduced to discourage the production of cocoa leaves that are used to produce illegal drugs.
